A field of long distance runners including Left to Right: Darell General, U.S., Pamenos Ballantyne, St. Vincent; Douglas Wakiihuri, Kenya, Georges Jules, Virgin Islands, Steve Lamens, Virgin Islands, Ronald Holassie, Trinidad, Doug Brown, U.S. and Bill Gladfelter, Virgin Islans, line up for the start of the 24th Annual Virgin Islands Half-Marathon--Freedom Run  on November 29, 1998 in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.  The race was won by Wakiihuri in 1:06.36

Douglas Wakiihuri, Kenya, wins the V.I. Half-Marathon with a race record.  He is the Silver Medal  winner in the Seoul Olympics Marathon, World Champion 1987 IAAF marathon, World Marathon CupChampion, Athens, Greece, winner of The Commonwealth Games  marathon, New York and London Marathons. Jackie Morgan, #209, a Freshman at the University of New Mexico and graduate of St. Croix's Country Day School, nears the finish with the second best time in the race history.
