Memorial Day 2Mile was
quick
May 28, 2012--St. Croix, V.I.--The running of the 29th
Annual Memorial Day 2Mile Road Race in St. Croix, Virgin Islands saw the
numbers 1 and 2 runners finish in that order. This year however, number
two set a new race and course record. Billy Bohlke, the holder of the
V.I. National Record at 1500m, 3000m, the mile and 5,000m cruised to
victory as he strives to maintain fitness and have fun. His time on the
downhill course was 10 minutes 8 seconds a bit short of the personal
best 9:06 he ran in 2005. Amallee Lockhart a V.I. Policeman was the
second place male finisher in 10:46; triathlete Will Piel was third in
11:14; Randle Nielsen was fourth in 11:22; Mike Klein was fifth in
11:27; Brad Lenhart was sixth in 12:10; T.J. Vandehay was seventh in
13:02; Aron Balkin was eighth in 13:11; ninth Charles Chapman 15:10;
Shawn Lewis was tenth in 15:35; Michael Springer was eleventh in 16:10;
Cooper Crowther was twelfth in 18:44; Michael Springer Jr. was
thirteenth in 19:51.
Ninfa Barnard, winner of the 2009 race, had a
fantastic race as she set a new course and race record to finish first
for females and second overall with a time of 10:23. Barnard just
completed her junior year at the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff where
she is an honor student in the natural sciences. She came into the race
after leading her college cross-country and track teams to a record
setting year. She set a new Virgin Islands record in the 800m with a
time of 2:09. Theresa Harper, multiple winner of the race was second
with a time of 12:20; defending champion, Glorial Adiams was third in
18:44; Dulcie Crowther was fourth in 18:48; Nichole Morales was fifth in
19:52 and Nancy McClearn was sixth in 22:36.
Notes:
1] New construction on the route connecting it to the new
“Bypass” made it necessary to alter the start line location, thus the
new course designation.
2] The V.I. Police Department provided expert traffic
control for the event.
3] The race record is 8:58 set by V.I. Olympian Marlon
Williams
4] Mike Klein, St. Croix Scenic 50Mile champion ran the
Memorial 2Mile in 11:27, the exact time he ran in 2005
5] The last time Amallee Lockhart ran the Memorial Day
2Mile was in 2001and he also finished second, his time? 10:45, just one
second faster than this year’s time.
The next race on the V.I.Pace Runners Calendar is the 28th
Annual Women Race on Sunday June 3 at 5pm in Frederiksted
