9/13/15...St. Croix, Virgin Islands...Juan Robles received a training grant
from the Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation for a high-altitude camp
in Colombia, South America this past summer.
On Sunday he led a small group of road runners from start to finish
on a scenic and challenging 6.2 mile course on St. Croix’s north shore and
took first place in his second race of the week with a time of 34:42.
“I know I can run faster with competition”, he said after the race
where he added the V.I. 10K Championship title to his title of V.I.
Half-Marathon Champion.
The fifth annual edition of the race was more fun than competitive for the
group as medals and certificates were awarded to each of the participants.
Theresa Harper, making a comeback for a serious leg injury, and
training for a April’s Boston Marathon was the first female to cross the
finish line which is also the finish line for the St. Croix International
Marathon which she will run to qualify for Boston. Defending champions Shane
Degannes Ruth Ann David and V.I. Marathon Champion Bridget Klein did not run
in Sunday’s race. Robles earned
a slot in the NACAC 10K Series to be run in Guadeloupe, FWI in October.

Billy Bohlke, multiple V.I. national record holder from 1500m to 5000m and V.I. National Team Member in several regional and world championships, acknowledged his level of conditioning yet still managed to win the 6.2 mile race with a time of 41 minutes and 1 second. He climbed the first mile in 6:01 and average around six minutes per mile to the half-way point and slowed on the long climb from mile 4.5 to mile 5. The race for the female title was a bit competitive as runner, cyclist, triathlete Theresa Harper who has at some point won just about every road race in St. Croix battled back and forth with Molly Nodler, a new-comer to St Croix road racing. Husband and wife victorious in V.I. 10K...
Sept. 22, 2012, St. Croix, Virgin Islands--he Virgin Islands 10K Road Race almost didn’t happen this year due to a decision of the NACAC 10K Series to take St. Croix off this year’s calendar. Not to worry, local runners and walkers were able to toe the line for the V.I.’s version of the race named “The Virgin Islands 10K Road Race Championships.
In what turned out to be a very close race for the top medals, Jason Snow won the race held on St. Croix scenic North Shore Road, by a very narrow one second margin with a time of 45:32 over Steve Horness 45:33. These two made the race competitive as Snow took the early lead and looked to ease to victory only to have Horness start to close what was a large gap at the 5k turn around. At near Estate Rust Op and the 4 mile mark, Horness caught and passed Snow only to have him as his shadow until less than 50 meters to the finish where Snow would pull away for the victory. Jay Glason was the third male finisher in 53:54; Joe Williamson was fourth in 54:47; Aaron Balkin was fifth in 56:56; Roger Hatfield was sixth in 57:54. Walkers Ronald Russell finished in 1:46.09; Andre Muhammad 1:46.10; Richard Muhammad and Kevin Muhammad completed a shortened course.
Heidi Snow the 2009 St.Croix International Marathon Champion, was the first place female finisher in 49:04; Julie Somer was second in 53:28; Amanda Wareheim was third in 58:11. Walkers Marcia Muhammad 2:12.49; Lenore Muhammad 2:12.26; Lynda Muhammad 2:12.26
Notes: 1] The race was open to all including participants in the V.I. Vegetarian Society Retreat held over the weekend. 2] Last year the NACAC 10K Series included St. Croix on its calendar. This year the races are being held in The Dominican Republic, The British Virgin Islands, St. Kitts and Nevis, Antigua, Trinidad and Tobago and Martinique 3] The October races on the V.I.Pace Runners Calendar i
