3/28/2014--St. Croix,
Virgin Islands USA...A small group of runners and walkers participated in
the 13th Annual UVI/Queen Mary Highway 5K Run/Walk on Friday
morning on a course that took them from the Sunshine Mall in Frederiksted to
the St. Croix Campus of the University of the Virgin Islands.
Malique Smith of the St. Croix Track Club
repeated as the winner of the 3.1 mile race and was unchallenged.
His time was 18.58.
Smith, who is preparing for the CARIFTA
Junior Track and Field Championships next month in Martinique, was looking
forward to competing against the top V.I. distance runner Juan Robles, but
that wasn’t to be.
Randall Nielsen was the second male with a
time of 20:15 and Steve Horness was the third place male with a time of
20:30. Briget Klein with Jolly
Roger was the top female finisher and second overall in the race with a time
of 19:40 as she too was unchallenged.
Twelve year-old Mikaela Smith of the St.
Croix Track Club was the second place female in 21:54 and just ahead of
Theresa Harper who finished third in 22:28. Awards were presented to
the top three male and female finishers and to the first UVI Female Student

Mother and Son Take Top Places in 12th UVI/Queen Mary Highway 5K
3/15/2013 St. Croix, Virgin Islands--At least a hundred runners and walkers participated in the 12th Annual UVI/Queen Mary Highway 5K Walk/Run on Friday morning on the historic Queen Mary Highway route from Sunshine Mall to UVI. Malique Smith of the St. Croix Track Club/St. Croix Educational Complex High School, defended his title as the first place finisher when he crossed the finish line between the palm trees of the Albert A. Sheen St.Croix Campus with a time of 17:53 (5:46 per-mile pace). Unlike last year when he battled with veteran long distance runner Billy Bohlke to the finish line, he led the race from the start. Elijah De Iris was second in 20:16 (6:32 per-mile pace) and Khalid Mathew was third in a close 20:17 (6:32 per-mile pace). Making the competitive nature of the event a family affair, Malique’s mom, Mireille Smith took the title as the top female finisher. The former All-America middle distance runner, covered the 3.1 mile distance in 22:38. HAKKI Diearbeklkogw, a UVI student was the second place female finisher with a time of 25:07 (8:06 per-mile pace) and Ashley Paddie of St. Croix Track Club finished third in 25:19 (8:10 per-mile pace). Runners/Walkers help celebrate UVI's 50th Anniversary...
3/23/2012--St. Croix, Virgin Islands—A group of nearly 60 runners and walkers lined up for the start of the 11th Annual UVI/Queen Mary Highway 5K Walk/Run on history Queen Mary Highway in Frederiksted in the race to determine who would reach the Albert A. Sheen Campus of the University of the Virgin Islands St. Croix first. In the closest finish ever, multiple V.I. National Record holder Billy Bohlke, of V.I.Pace Runners and14 year-old Malique Smith of The St. Croix Track Club and The St. Croix Educational Complex High School Barracudas Track and Field team battled through the 3.1 mile point-to-point course step for step. With lead changes between them throughout the race, they made the only turn on the course at the palms of the UVI campus together with Smith only a shoulder ahead and for the final 500 meters in the race to the finish, Bohlke eased just a step or two ahead with less that 30 meters to go, Smith with a fierce sprint came back to break the tape by mere inches!. Both runners ran the same time of 17 minutes 58 seconds. Virgil Johnson from Versales, Kentucky, on St. Croix celebrating the Johnson’s 25th wedding anniversary, finished third in 19.55. In the women’s race Mirelle Smith (Malique’s mom) of the St. Croix Track Club took the early lead in the women’s event for nearly a mile into the race until Theresa Harper with the V.I. Triathlon Federation and multiple winner of the event, took the lead for good with a first place finish in 21:59; Smith was second in 23:01; Earthla Augustin of the V.I. Pace Runners took third place and the first UVI Alumni in 26:04.

Youth Wins In Record Run
3/18/2011--St. Croix, Virgin Islands--Thirteen year-old Malique Smith of the St. Croix Track Club became the youngest winner of the Queen Mary Highway/UVI 5K and added to its 10th year celebration on Friday morning in Frederiksted, with a time of 18:51 seconds, unofficially the fastest 5k run by a youth in the Virgin Islands. Over 70 participants toed the start line at Sunshine Mall on Queen Mary Highway and made their way to the finish between the palms at UVI’s St. Croix Campus. Smith, and 8th grade honor-roll student at Good Shepard School and the son of V.I. Olympian and Pan Am Games Bronze medalist, Keith Smith and NCAA Division I 800m Champion and six CARIFTA medals, Mirielle Smith, went to the lead early and with a relaxed stride, held UVI student and fellow SCTC member, Ian Cuffy off six times to win the race. Ian Cuffy finished second and took top honors for UVI Students with a time of 19:12; Jason Snow finished third in 20:26; Justin Hitesman of SCTC finished fourth in 20:34 and Randall Nielsen finished fifth in 21:59. Theresa Harper, St. Croix’s top female distance runner and double CAC Bronze Medalist with the V.I. Cross-Country Team, led the women with a time of 21:19 for fifth place overall. Mirielle Smith closed in on Harper to finished second in 22:04; Wyndi Ambrose of the SCTC and finished third and was the first UVI student finisher for females with a time of 22:23; Heidi Snow, 2009 St. Croix International Marathon Champion was fourth in 22:33 and Zuhrisha Jacobs a UVI student was fifth in 25:21.

Dozens of runners and walkers took to the road Friday morning on historic Queen Mary Highway in St. Croix to celebrate the founding of The University of the Virgin Islands. The group representing runners and walkers from the UVI family including students, faculty, alumni, staff, retirees. From the community: public and private school students, sorority and fraternity members, V.I. National Track and Field team members, V.I. National Guard members and others from a cross-section of the community took part in the event. Billy Bohlke of V.I.Pace Runners and V.I. national record holder in most long distance races, led the way in the race from Sunshine Mall in Frederiksted to palm trees at UVI, with a time of 17 minutes and 29 seconds; Ian Cuffy a UVI student and member of the St. Croix Track Club led the race in the early going trailing a V.I. Police Department lead vehicle and finished second in 18:50; Alexander Washington had a strong race as he finished third in 21:35; Richard Jeanpierre was fourth in 21:44 and Scott Fricks was fifth in 22:16. \ Bohlke and Smith lead runners on Queen Mary Highway to UVI 3-14-08 St.Croix, Virgin Islands--Billy Bohlke, led from the start and took first place in the 7th Queen Mary Highway/UVI 5K Road Race on Friday morning, a run that celebrates the 46th Anniversary of the University of the Virgin Islands. Bohlke, in training for the Nebraska Marathon where he will represent his Air Force National Guard unit, had a time of 16 minutes and 56 seconds. Mireille Smith, a former National Team member of Surinam and the St.Croix Track Club, led the female runners across the finish line with a time of 22:37.
