The 30th Annual National Library Week...
Run To Your Library...

Jay Gleason 57 beats last years’ time in NLW 5K  V.I.Pace Photo

April 14, 2012--St. Croix, Virgin Islands--To the onlookers at the 30th Annual National Library Week...Run To Your Library 5K, it would appear to be a continuation of last month’s UVI/Queen Mary 5K with the same lead runners battling to the finish.

Veteran Billy Bohlke and the up and comer Malique Smith were together for most of the four-lap historic course around the town of Chiristiansted.  With experience in his favor, Bohlke maintained a minimum of two steps on Smith all the way and with little surges on the slight inclines, pulled away from him on the third lap to finish first in the race with a time of 17 minutes 59 seconds; Smith, the defending champion who had a major photo finish win over Bohlke at the UVI/Queen Mary 4K last month, finished strong with a time of 18:20; Brad Lenhart, improving on each race, finished third with a time of 20:28; Troy Holloway was fourth in 20:34; Steve Horness was fifth in 21:20; Mike Klein was sixth in 21:58; Scott Fricks was seventh in 22:21; Jay Gleason was eigth in 23:28; Kevin Liburd was ninth in 25:40 and Teddy Seymour was tenth in 29:41

In the early stage of the race, Mireille Smith held a comfortable lead until marathoner and defending champion Theresa Harper overtook her mid-way to win the race in 21:29 just three seconds of her time last year.  Smith finished second with the exact time she ran last year 22:01; Dulcie Crowther a veteran of this race, ran a faster time than last year to finish third in 25:02; Patty Coleman finished fourth in 25:44; Earthla Augustin was fifth in 27:05; Louise Stapleton was sixth in 27:24 and Angela Augustin was seventh in 35:38.

Notes:

1] In recognition of the 30th Anniversary of the National Library Week...Run To Your Library celebrated author and runner Larry Williams was at the event and presented two of his signed books: The Mount Sinai Myth  an archaeological search for Mt. Sinai in Egypt and Confessions of a Tax Rebel  on his battle with IRS. The books were raffled to participants in the race. He is one of the founders of the Rock & Roll Marathon Series (San Diego).

2] St. Croix author Lila Linzer provided two signed copies of her book (which were also raffled to the runners) Once Upon An Island  Illustrated by Joan Luby.  The first draft of the book ...collection of four stories for children is set on a Caribbean island where the cows may forget their friends, lizards know more than you think, spiders talk to dragonflies, and a morning dove thinks she has more power than she really has”, was typeset in the Florence Williams Public Library by the then Head Librarian Wallace Williams. The book was published in three editions: in Great Britian with Joanna Carey the illustrator and in Japanese.

3] In a special presentation, Earthla Augustin, Poet and V.I.Pace Runner read a special poem entitled The Williams (inspired by V.I. Olympic Marathon Runners Marlon Williams and Wallace Williams) from her book Carry The Key . She also ...ran to the library... with her book in a backpack.

4] Last week, Malique Smith (at the entry level age of 14) competed with the Virgin Island National Junior Track and Field Team, in the CARIFTA Junior Track and Field Championships in the high jump, 1500m and 3000m.  He joined three others who also were at the entry level age wise in the competition.

5] The awards ceremony took place on the steps of the Florence Williams Public Library where, with the exception of one year when the race was held at the Sunshine Mall in Frederiksted they have happened for 29 of the past 30 years.

6] The first official V.I.Pace Runners event took place at the public library in St. Croix 1n 1978.  It was a group run from the Athalie Petersen Public Library in Frederiksted (then at a temporary location at what is now the Legislature of the Virgin Islands), to the Florence Williams Public Library on King St. in Christiansted, the exact finish line for the NLW 5K).

8] Ricki Marshall of the Florence Williams prepared special bookmarks, a brochure and goodie bag and was on hand to make the presentation of awards to the participants.

7] The Virgin Islands Pace Runners and the NLW...Run To Your Library were founded by Wallace Williams, participant in that first event and V.I. Territorial Librarian (Retired)
