12-13-08 St.Croix, Virgin Islands--Billy Bohlke, commercial pilot, had the unusual experience of being 18,000 feet in the sky and flying the Bohlke Airways commercial plane from Nevis to St.Croix just minutes before the start of the annual V.I.Pace Runners St.Croix Metric Mile Road Race. Bohlke and his father Bill senior alerted the race director by phone that he was clearing customs and would make the 5pm start for the race in Estate Upper Love. Challenged by the fleet footed group of three of the top high school middle runners including Seymour Walter (V.I. Seymour led the race through this point until less than just a few meters to the finish where Bohlke had flashbacks and called on the experience of his college days as the top miler at LSU (Louisiana State University). “I suddenly was in a race like in college when I realized that this is the time, this is when I have to finish the race. That’s where I learned how to press at the finish, to change the pace and close the gap.” His time for first place in his first time to run it was 4 minutes and 7 seconds.
